Neighborhood News

Up

Sunday March 16, 2003.  Four boxes were installed in the neighborhood.  Two more boxes will be installed later.  Since I'll be attending the NABS (North American Bluebird Society) meeting next week, most likely these two boxes will be installed later in March.  We had so much snow, we were house bound for 9 days before our car was able to leave our garage.  It took 25 days before the snow melted, and I had to shovel some of it to get our second car out...  This was one of the heaviest snowfalls we have had in this area.  The snow also slowed the installation of the boxes.

The boxes installed were mounted on T-posts and had 8" by 2' stove pipe predator guards.  This should prevent predation by most ground predators (cats, snakes, coons, squirrels, etc.)  Some of the boxes had two entrance holes, some only one.  This is done in order to test the success of one vs. the other in our neighborhood.

Saturday March 29, 2003.  The last two boxes were installed.  Now there are 14 boxes in the park, 6 in our neighborhood, and 8 in my yard, total 28 boxes.  I also inspected all the boxes and met with our friendly neighbors.  Of course, it is still early to have nests, nest building usually starts in April.

Tuesday May 25, 2004.  The 2003 season was one of the worst on record for me and our area in general.  It was too cold and rainy in the start of the season, many Bluebirds abandoned their nests, many perished due to lack of food.  The same was true for Tree Swallows.  For the present season I shall make a record for each box in the neighborhood, plus at least two of the boxes on my property.  To see the record for any box in the neighborhood, just click on the link to that box as described in the column to the left.
